Media Frenzy in UK Over Susan Boyle’s Breakdown

Jun 4, 2009

Susan Boyle’s checking into a psychiatric hospital after coming in second on the TV show “Britian’s Got Talent” has caused a media frenzy on the other side of the Atlantic.

The latest update, by the way, is that she’s now checked out of the Priory Hospital in North London.

Boyle’s cousin, Irish Senator Dan Boyle, told a reporter for IrishCentral.com that “The showbiz world can be quite bitchy.”

He added, “In these TV shows, it’s all about being controversial to entertain people.”

Furthermore, the individual person “gets lost” in these shows, Senator Boyle said, complaining that all “Britain’s Got Talent” wants is ratings and media coverage.

Hmmm. Uh, yeah, it’s a TV show.

Over at mirror.co.uk, columnist Stuart Maconie observed that the “good old media circus has rolled up with painted caravans full of experts and commentators keen to tell us about important lessons and what we can learn from all this.”

Then he points out that we can’t learn anything from it:

“Not until another 40-odd-year-old angel-voiced virgin with learning difficulties from a small Scottish town gets catapulted to instant stardom and then has her hopes dashed by some dancing kids before being admitted to the Priory having had a small breakdown.”

“Don’t hold your breath then,” Maconie says, adding, “But bloody hell, if it does happen, we’ll be well prepared.”

  1. Susan Boyle needs someone who is successful in the entertainment business to lead her through her potential life (I HOPE) of recording star. The media SHOULD be aware of its impacts, good or bad – and rely on the history of first time performers

  2. Hi there guys, all woman’s situations have their inconveniences. We feel those of the here and now but never see nor feel those of the future
