ABC's 'Cavemen,' 'Carpoolers' Make Solid Start

October 3, 2007 12:57 PM

CavemenThe debut of ABC’s much-discussed “Cavemen” sitcom got off to a stronger-than-expected start last night, tying to win its time period and providing a solid lead-in for fellow freshman debut “Carpoolers.”

“Cavemen,” which was not screened for critics, earned a 3.3 rating among adults 18 to 49 in the preliminary Nielsens, matching the first half of CBS’ “NCIS.”

Though “Cavemen” likely will get the headlines, in the halls of ABC the real shock is the performance of “Carpoolers,” a series with weak buzz that improved on “Cavemen” with an even better 3.4. The comedies led into “Dancing With the Stars” (4.3) and a resurgent “Boston Legal” (3.1).

ABC came in second place behind Fox, which had “Bones” (2.9) and “House” (7.1), slipping 13 percent and 9 percent, respectively, from last week’s premieres.

NBC was third with the season premiere of “The Singing Bee” (a series-low 2.3), “The Biggest Loser” (up 10 percent to a 3.3) and “Law & Order: SVU” (an on-par 4.5).

CBS was fourth with “NCIS” (3.6) and “The Unit” (3.2) building from last week’s premieres (by 13 percent and 14 percent, respectively), while freshman series “Cane” (2.5) slipped 17 percent (just don’t tell “Jericho” fans).

The CW’s “Beauty and the Geek” (1.3) and “Reaper” (1.3) each fell 13 percent from last week.

I don't blame ABC for refusing to preview "Cavemen." Most of those 'Nose-in-the-air"
critics had written it off without even seeing it.

Reminds me of the "Beverly Hillbillies" which the critics looked down their noses at, but which the public quickly made number one.

Let's see how Carpoolers does NEXT week before we break out the champagne. I watched it - hated it - and will avoid it like the plague in the future.

Francis:

I actually really liked Carpoolers. I was surprised, but I did. I think it'll get funnier with each episode. TJ Miller as Marmaduke kept me laughing the whole episode.

Dave L:

I SAY GOOD FOR ABC ANYTHING THAT NEW WILL TAKE A FEW WEEKS TO TAKE OFF LOOK HOW LONG MARY HARTMAN HUNG AROUND I'M THEY WILL BOTH MAKE IT ABC WILL STAY # 1 ALL SEASON MARK MY WORDS THANKS, DAVE -DETROIT

Blanche Redhead:

I think it is fair to say that is the first and only time the words "Cavemen" and "Beverly Hillbillies" are ever seen in the same paragraph.

Hey Red, here's a little inside intelligence for one who seems to need it: TV critics don't exactly study epistemology at Harvard.

Blanche Redhead:

Hey Red Blanchard ,

Very cool web site you got there! :)

BEN:

I LISTENED TO ONE OF THE ACTORS FOR CARPOOLERS ON HOWARD STERN AND GAVE IT A SHOT AND ENJOYED IT

Felipe:

I could only watch "Cavemen" for 10 minutes before the agony of unfunny jokes and pretty much bland performances set in. The minutes seemed to drag on forever the I changed it to "Reaper" and was quite content. Sorry "Caveman" not a fan!

Kevin:

ABC dropped George Lopez to replace it with Cavemen? YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING.

Carpoolers may have a chance - if ABC discloses why all the carpoolers happen to work in the same building. I assume ABC will reveal what the other people do for a living in future shows. I do miss Jerry O'Connel in Jordan.

I really do miss George Lopez.

Kevin:

OMG - Caveman was the worst. I could only watch 10min of that drivel myself. It wasn't funny, topical or even mildly entertaining. It sounded like a crappy premise to begin with and man it was worse than that. This is why people watch reality TV. People scream about the loss of written television and this is the best they can come up with. A shbow based on a car insurance commercial? It works in 30 seconds spurts - barely.

Justin T:

The ratings for these shows are dismally low. Everything is somewhere between a 2.5 and a 5.0 rating. Ten or twenty years ago, any show in the top twenty was above a ten rating! Everyone is watching cable! The networks have become irrelevant.

Marvin M:

What is wrong with you people? Everyone who says Cavemen was bad stopped watching after 10 minutes. Like that's fair. I think you had your minds made up before you saw it. And dude, George Lopez is terrible. Get used to the stone age.

Cavemen wasn't so bad. Carpoolers has some potential, as long as they give Bruce McCulloch free reign.

I'll tell you, it astounds me that a member of The Kids in the Hall is helming a sitcom at a Disney unit.

Actually, it's just a little depressing.

Thank you Blanche Redhead
PS I didn't watch the show at all- only noticing how quick the self-anointed 'critics' are to put down new ideas, even before they have seen them!

Carpoolers was a great surprise for me and my wife. We watched Caveman just to see what it was like and happened to catch Carpoolers by accident and we both think it is one of the funniest shows on TV! I am so sick of reality tv and glad to find a new funny sitcom!
