'House’ Wins Night; ‘Cane’ Halts Descent

October 31, 2007 11:48 AM

CaneYou know that scene in action movies where the hero is trapped in a flooding room, the water has risen to his head, he’s up against the ceiling and straining to breathe inside that last couple inches of air?

That’s CBS’ “Cane,” which last night managed to stop the compartment from flooding after five consecutive weeks of ratings drops.

The show has a 2.0 preliminary Nielsen rating among adults 18 to 49, matching last week. Had the numbers sunk further, the rating would have gone from unacceptable-during-any-season-except-this-one to unacceptable-even-with-a-pending-writers-strike. CBS plans to wait another week to see if “Cane” can start bailing out and give itself some breathing room.

Otherwise, Fox won the night with “Bones” (3.2 and on par) and “House” (7.0, down 8 percent from last week).

ABC was second with perennial favorite “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” (3.8). Even after 41 years, the “Brown” special won the 8 p.m. hour, besting CBS’ “NCIS,” Fox’s “Bones” and NBC’s “The Singing Bee.” ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” results show followed and was down slightly (4.2). “Boston Legal” was average (3.1).

CBS and NBC tied for third. CBS offered “NCIS” (down 13 percent to a 3.3), “The Unit” (down 7 percent to a 2.8) and “Cane” (2.0). NBC had “Bee” (1.7), “The Biggest Loser” (down 10 percent to a 2.8) and a “Law & Order: SVU” repeat (3.0).

The CW aired a clip show for “Beauty and the Geek” (1.1), which didn’t help “Reaper” (1.1).

SJ2:

So glad to hear about CANE. It's such a good, good show.

Scott:

Personally, I think Cane was as big a disaster last week as any week. Remember, Law & Order had a REPEAT on last night, and Cane actually finished in third in the time slot behind the Law & Order repeat !! If Law & Order was a new espisode the show would have finished even lower again. It is time for Cane to pack up, and leave.

I knew from the very beginning not to get wrapped up in Cane. It was kind of giving off that Smith, Black Donnellys vibe where it would implode before it found an audience.

Matt:

CBS hasn't had a hit in that timeslot since Judging Amy. SVU and Boston Legal are just great shows week after week. They also get great guest stars, which makes an appealing show even more appealing. However, I would think that Jimmy Smits could carry a show as he has in the past with NYPD Blue and L.A. Law. It's just amazing how CBS does well everywhere, but this one time slot... It's downright weird.

Lily Hodge:

I'm surprised that you would give that much emphasis to the news that "Cane" had stopped sinking, without mentioning until the very end of the story in passing that "Law & Order: SVU" was in repeat (in fact, I think, in its first repeat of the season). Don't you think that may have had something to do with the pause in "Cane's" freefall, since "SVU" in first run always wins that hour and nearly doubles the ratings of CBS and ABC combined? When "SVU" is back, "Cane" will continue downward. The reprieve will be a short one.

Dan:

I believe NCIS had a 3.3, not a 2.2 in the demo. Last week it had a 3.7. I doubt it dropped that much because of The Great Pumpkin! LOL

ROBIN TORRO:

I LOVE CANE AND THE WHOLE ENSAMBLE. I AM A TRUE SVU WATCHER THO TOO, SO ITAPE ONE AND WATCH ANOTHER. SUGGESTION. NBC FREQUENTLY RERUNS EPISODE OF SVU SAT NIGHT 10 PM. HOPEFULL, LAST WEEK HAD TAPED IT. YET IT WAS BIONIC WOMAN INSTEAD. BUT CBS COULD OFFER A REPEATED EPIDODE OF CANE WHEN ON FRIDAY AND SATURDAY WE HAVE NOTHING TO WATCH AT ALL. ,AY HELP CANE WHICH I HOPE DOES NOT FAIL. P.S. HOUSE WINS ALL THOUGH!

Debb:

TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW TO WATCH CANE.....IT'S A GREAT SHOW!!....I AGREE WITH EARLIER BLOGGER - MAYBE IT'S THE TIME SLOT....I WAS A BOSTON LEGAL WATCHER AND A SVU WATCHER TILL I SAW THE FIRST EPISODE OF CANE.......IT RANKS FIRST WITH ME....!!

CBS - GIVE IT A CHANCE TO FIND AN AUDIENCE....DON'T GIVE UP ON IT !!

c maxwell:

We loved CANE? Is there any chance it will return?
We do not feel it was given a chance.
