CBS Ratings Seesaw: Friday Up, Sunday Down

November 12, 2007 12:29 PM

MoonlightCBS’ ratings fortunes teeter-tottered over the weekend: Its Friday night crime dramas “Ghost Whisperer” and “Moonlight” rose to impressive gains, but most of its Sunday slate, led by “The Amazing Race,” dipped from last week’s season highs.

CBS ruling Friday is nothing new. But the network seems to be strengthening its hold as “Ghost Whisperer” (2.9 preliminary rating among adults 18 to 49, up 16% from last week), “Moonlight” (2.5, up 14%) and “Numb3rs” (2.8, up 22%) jumped week-to-week. “Moonlight” matched its highest rating to date.

Also Friday, the time-period premiere of Fox’s “Don’t Forget the Lyrics” (2.2) doubled its “Next Great American Band” lead-in (1.1) to place second in the 9 p.m. hour and match its Thursday average. If the number holds up next week, it could give Fox some much-needed leverage on Friday nights—particularly once scripted competitors start going into repeats.

On Sunday, however, CBS was in second place. Which doesn’t sound too bad until you realize that NBC, ABC and Fox all tied for first.

NBC had “Football Night in America” (3.4) and “Sunday Night Football” (5.7, down 15% from last week).

ABC enjoyed across-the-board increases with “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” (5.3, its best audience since February), “Desperate Housewives” (7.2, up a couple ticks) and “Brothers & Sisters” (5.0, up 9%).

Fox’s comedies continue to perform strongly, with “The Simpsons” (5.1, its second-best number since January), “King of the Hill” (3.7, up 6% from its last original episode), “Family Guy” (on par) and “American Dad” (4.0, its best since January).

CBS saw drops for “The Amazing Race” (a 28% drop from last week’s premiere) and “Cold Case” (down 14% from last week’s season high), but “Shark” was up slightly (2.6).

The CW had “CW Now” (0.4), “Life Is Wild” (0.4) and repeats.

Ethan Andrews:

There was no way CBS was going to match last week's numbers, when they had the Colts/Patriots lead-in, the highest rated Sunday afternoon football game in at least 20 years. Next week should be up slightly from this week, but not near last week. Just my two cents.

Claire:

I am thrilled to hear that Moonlight is still holding its own. But I fear with the writer's strike, CBS might end up cancelling it (Not enough new eps to finish the season, and the risk that they won't bring it back in the Fall). I hope that this terrific, well acted show is not a casualty of the war between the studios and the writers.

anonymous:

I too am glad for the ratings boost of Moonlight. I hope it continues and that CBS will FINALLY pick it up! Please don't let it become a casualty.

Mary:

Moonlight's ratings have been pretty consistent and that's encouraging. The writer's strike also concerns me. I know that Joel Silver and the network is behind this gem of a show. Let's hope something can be worked out to keep this show alive.

Becky:

Moonlight is an awesome show! It is no wonder it is consistently winning the coveted demographic group of 18-49. I love this show and classify it as one of the best shows on primetime in a long time. I definitely do not want to miss an episode! Moonlight has already created quite a great deal of buzz. We have a steadily growing group of dedicated fans as well as numerous fan-created websites dedicated to Moonlight. I truly hope CBS commits to giving us a full season of episodes and renews it for a 2nd season. As others have mentioned, the writers' strike does concern me and how it will affect our show but I keep praying for the best.

LONG LIVE MOONLIGHT!!!

Danelle:

It is good to hear Moonlight is coming up strong. I love this show!!!! I hardly watch TV so for me to sit down EVERY week and watch a show is a big big deal. I am totally addicted. I love the cast, the writing, the whole thing. Please give this show a full season and more to come!

Pineappleish:

I am glad to heat Moonlight's numbers are strong. Moonlight is my favorite show this season. I am hoping that the strike will end sooner rather than later so ML has a fair shot.
Is it Friday yet?

colleen:

I am very happy that Moonlight is holding its own and still winning the important demographics that the studios look at. I not sure how many episodes they have in the can before the strike, but I hope that they are given a go ahead for a full season.

Frankly, if this strike doesn't settle soon, all shows for this year could be lost.

I think it would help moonlight's chances if everyone who enjoys the show went to the CBS website http://www.cbs.com/ and gave feedback on how much they like moonlight. At the very bottom of the website there is a section on the left hand side called feedback where you can comment directly to cbs.

Karen:

I LOVE Moonlight and look forward to Fridays CBS lineup because its great and Moonlight is perfect between Ghost and Numbers. This last week was the BEST episode yet. It rocked! Every board I am on, when I bring it up people start posting I LOVE THAT SHOW! Please let CBS not drop it because of the strike. I give them feedback often but I don't know that feedback makes any impression.

K.J.:

MOONLIGHT is the only reason I watch CBS at all. It's a great show. I hope the audience continues to grow.

Linda Vadura:

I'm also thrilled that Moonlight is holding its own in the ratings and with the right demographics. It is easily the best new show this season with really good characters, sardonic humor, riveting romance. Like others, I'm worried about the writer's strike. I think they have 12 episodes written and have finished filming #10. I really hope CBS continues to support the show and allow it to continue to build an audience. Please let it be Friday soon...

K.L.:

MOONLIGHT is the reason I can't wait for Friday night...this show keeps getting better every week, and its fanbase and ratings continue to grow. We, the fans, can't get enough of Mick and Beth....PLEASE keep our show alive, CBS.

Candy:

I absolutely LOVE the Moonlighting series. Mick St.John is the sexiest vampire ever. I think the plots are really great too and music. It is my favorite thing to watch on tv.
PLEEASE don't cancel it.

DixieDarlin:

I am another Moonlight fan who hopes this show continues. I am glad that Moonlight is getting lots of fan support.

mandy:

I am hoping for a full season pick up of Moonlight. This is the best show I've seen in a long time, and has gotten consistently better since the first few episodes. Everyone is talking about it.

Betty:

It's not just the 18-49 group watching Moonlight. My sister and I are in our fifties and WE LOVE IT! How dare they count us out! I normally don't watch much network TV, but after catching the 4th episode I started recording it and we watch them over and over. You can never catch everything the first time around anyway. And, who doesn't want to watch Alex again and again and again..........well, you get the picture. I did go to the CBS site and give them my feedback. I told them if they cancelled Moonlight they were going to have millions of seriously pissed off women all over them like white on rice.

Linda:

This show is just great! Well acted, great cast, keeps you waiting for Friday nights! Please keep this show on!!! And ladies, I'm in my sixties and Mick is gorgeous!! He & Beth are great together!! Love this show!!

Lori:

I just watched the first episode. ( I missed it the first time but have watched all episodes since) This is by far the best show in a long time. The chemisty between Mick and Beth is so amazing. I NEVER used to stay home for Friday TV. Now my husband, my 13 year old son, and I grab a pizza and settle ourselves for this AWESOME series EVERY Friday now. Please CBS listen to the comments and continue with more episode. I will also abe the first in line to by the season on DVD!

Anne :

Why would CBS cancel MOONLIGHT when it received the award for the best new show on TV? Is CBS paying attention to what the public wants to see?

Marlitt:

PLEASE!!! keep moonlight, ghost whisperer on the air!!!!I love friday nights on cbs!!!!! Vampires Rule!!!!!!!!!!!!!
