Criss Angel Pulls Halloween Trick

November 1, 2007 11:08 AM

Viewing levels dropped last night due to Halloween, resulting in blameless series lows for many shows.

ABC and CBS tied for first place, with ABC running “Pushing Daisies” (2.6), “Private Practice” (3.8) and “Dirty Sexy Money” (2.9). CBS had “Kid Nation” (2.0), “Criminal Minds” (3.5) and “CSI: NY” (3.6).

NBC was third with a two-hour live edition of “Phenomenon” (2.3) and “Life” (1.9).

Fox and The CW had repeats.

On “Phenomenon,” judge Criss Angel unexpectedly called out both a contestant and his fellow judge Uri Geller as psychic frauds. After witnessing a series of performers demonstrating their ability to divine numbers, cards, words and objects hidden from view, Angel seemed to lose his patience after contestant Jim Callahan performed an odd ritual where he claimed to commune with the dead. Angel whipped out an envelope and offered either Callahan or Geller $1 million if they could tell him what was inside. A scuffle ensued; here’s the clip.

Mr. Mutato:

Criss Angel for the win!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Phil:

I honestly think that contestant is jsut full of BS you could tell how fake it was and i agree completely with criss angel the guy was nothing and im glad criss called him out

Mike:

Criss Angel was just calling it like he saw it. He said he found it "comical" and I'm pretty sure he wasn't alone. The guy was milking his "possession" to the point of terrible Mexican soap opera acting.

ZAINAB :

I LOVE CRISS ANGEL AND I ALWAYS WILL AND TO TELL U THE TRUTH I DO AGREE WITH HIM B CAUSE U CAN REALLY SEE HOW FAKE THAT WAS CRISS JUST WAS SAYING WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN SAID AND IF U WATCH CISS ANGEL MINDFREAK LIKE I DO U CAN SEE THE DIFFENCE HOW CISS ANGEL DOES IT AND THAT FONY WHATS HIS NAME DOES IT AND AGAIN I LOVE CRISS ANGEL AND HE IS REALLY IS THE MINDFREAK THAT HE SAYS HE IS

Gabelson:

The biggest phony, is Criss. His entire TV act could not be done without payrolled stooges and camera tricks. Criss also recently did a performance where HE claimed to channel the dead (for real). What a hypocrite. The contestant, if you noticed, said that he HIMSELF is a skeptic and that America should believe what they want to believe. That's already more honest than Angel, who can't do a single effect without trick photography, wires, or stooges. Angel is a self-promoting, pompous ass- he does a "tribute" to Houdini, then tells the audience how he "one-upped" Houdini by doing the same stunt in half the time???!! On Phenomenon, Angel's constantly telling contestants how he does a similar effect in his own act, but how much better HIS is. Bulls**t. In the magic community, he's known as Criss "ANGLE". The guy can barely talk, he looks like he fell out of a 1989 Def Leopard video, and isn't nearly as inventive as ANY of the contestants he's judging. And while dissing contestant Jim Callahan, Angel also dissed his co-host, Uri Geller (and creator of the show!), who is a legend in mentalism, and paved the road for guys like Angel. Bad form. Very bad form.

hmm:

Well, its sad when anyoen uses mere tricks to lie and manipulate the public, as so many paranormals or pyscics do.

I think it was very bad to call otu a co0ntestant on national tv liek that though, its not the place for that debate, he should have judged the man's act, not his beliefs.

there is a fine lien in magic, you do not want people to think you are sdoing tricks or they wont vbe amazed, however, you do not want to mislead them into spiritual or religious paradigms based on lies.

John Smith:

I think Criss Angel has let success go to his head. With all his success, why would he become a "simon caldwell of American Idol"?

Could have all been staged for publicity.

Carol:

Criss is great the guy was a fake and Gabelson is just jealous

Carol:

Criss is great the guy was a fake and Gabelson is just jealous

Chet Gristler:

I, too, get tired of Criss Angel's self promotion; however, I have to give him kudos on this one. That contestant was ridiculous. That being said, I would not be surprised if this was all staged to further promote the show. I'm sure Criss and Uri know what the contestants will be doing before they perform, so it seems odd that he would feel compelled to call them out at that time. Even if it was staged, it made for entertaining TV.

Marian Rhiannon:

Oh,come on,folks! Criss does "seances" on his show,true-but that's to show how anyone can fake a spirit encounter. He never claims that it's real and in fact reveals and the end that it's NOT. His whole point of such shows is to show how easy it is to fake it and that no one should be anything but entertained by psychics who claim to do so. I think that Jim C. hurt his credibility by becoming defensive-he could have just told Criss "another time".Criss always said he would confront anyone claiming such "powers",so no one should have been surprised! Criss only did what Houdini,Johnny Carson and the Amazing Randy have done-challenge the fakers.

Carole Clay:

Criss does indeed expose those who are pretending to be 'psychic' and has shown how simple it can be to fool people. He is honest about his own acts. Not that he tells how he does an illusion, but he tells that there IS a trick to it.
I think Criss is a good guy.
That argument will probably gain a lot of viewers in the future. I hope so!!

hakey mickey:

criss angel is honest about what he thinks and seriously the guy was a fake! he was great at calling out that guy and serious to be........criss wins!

halley mikey:

criss angel is honest about what he thinks and seriously the guy was a fake! he was great at calling out that guy and serious to be........criss wins!

Sabrina:

The contestant, should have NEVER said a word, NEVER moved toward Criss who is a judge. To dare to call anyone, a bigot, is going entirely too far. After saying that, I now will say, that Criss Angel has indeed let sucess go to his head. Before I am crucified, take the time, go back...watch his earlier interviews, see the humility in this man. He was kind and thankful for all that he had and was simply blown away at the fan base following. Fast forward to date, now he has the god syndrome, "I am the best, I have replaced them all, no one is better I am taking magic to higher plane, he has LOST that humble attitude" What does the word say, PRIDE GOES BEFORE A FALL.....Christopher my friend, I have told you so many times lately, find your beginning, I pray you are reading these post, read what your fans are saying, find that little boy from NEW YORK.

Maggie:

Criss is the fake using camera tricks. This guy was performing live. All of these 'mentalists' etc. use a story to demonstrate their trick, and the paranormal is just this guy's story. Whether or not it was overacted let's not forget that Criss just so happened to have a sealed envelope in his pocket. I think he was doing it for the attention. At least this contestent doesn't pay actors to 'ooh' at him to make him believable.
Let's not forget Criss was also attempting to call out Uri, who is far more credible in the industry than Criss. Uri has acted honestly and professionally to the contestants, now Criss just seems childish.

NEO:

The whole thing went down WRONG. Mr. Angel is arrogant and I think it showed. If he did not like the act, he should have been more tactful than insulting the man by saying it was "comical." I did not see anyone laughing in the audience.

On the other hand, Uri Geller, was kind to the contestant whether he believed it or not.

Question: Do we CARE that Angel can flaunt his money, his girlfriends and cars and diamonds/ He looks gawdy with all that "bling" and dresses like some old retired rocker from 1980. He then goes and TAKES EVERY opportunity to promote himself.

I have met him and he sure has changed. He has become an egotisical maniac. But you have to cut him some slack, he was late for Paris Hilton's Halloween party at the Luxor and was in a hurry to get there ! LOL!

Courtney:

For the idiot who said Ciss did an EPISODE on claiming to talk to the dead, he REVEALED at the end it WAS A HOAX you moron, so before you start to try and act smart, know your shit. He OFTEN shows how easy it is to scam people to show HE can act like he is talking to the dead as well, idiot.

PS-No camera tricks OR Stooges you ass.

skylights:

Criss was doing a service for everyone watching the show. He knows all the tricks, and he knows you don't have to pretend to talk to a dead guy to do this particular trick. Uri Gellar is a fraud and always has been, and so was this Jim Callahan guy.

keiv:

Uri Geller is a complete fraud, this has been known for many years (see James Randi's book "The Truth about Uri Geller" ISBN # 9780879751999)

Magic is not real, it is all tricks. Only frauds (like Uri Geller and Jim Callahan) claim to have real magical powers. Jim Callahan's act was comical, all he did was wiggle around on a chair. He is a 100% fraud. If he can really communicate with the dead, why doesn't he use his power to help humanity rather than for cheap parlor tricks?

If his power is real, he should take the Randi challenge (http://www.randi.org/joom/content/view/38/31/)

Chris Angel has never claimed to have magical powers, he admits that what he does is illusion.

Frauds should be exposed for what they are and I applaud Chris Angel for fighting the good fight.

Uri Geller however does not deserve to be on television.

thetruthbus@mac.com:

It seems to me there is an assumption in the argument above that there is no "real" magick (magick with a k refers to paranormal phenomena vs. entertainment sleight of hand). How do all you know that?? Jesus walked on water! Sai Baba did real magic. Have you ever had a "sixth sense" of something and were right??? Yes, people fake it and take advantage--like Uri has at times--but the people that debunk real magick out of jealous spite like Randi are doing far more damage in my opinion!!! Criss is doing real as well as trick magic!!!! and though I agree frauds shoud be exposed, I don't understand how he can deny real magick!!!! How do you call "mind over matter" a form of trick?? If you use the "power of the mind" to make someone see something or think the thing you want them to, then that IS magick!!! Explain how it could be otherwise, Criss!!!!

thetruthbus@mac.com:

Let's keep our arguments straight. There are three here: 1) real vs. no real magic, 2) faking for profit (by the way, you cannot fake something that is not real to begin with), and 3) wheather Jim was "faking" or just "setting up" a trick with really bad acting!!

I think Criss does do real magick, but debunks it. Why? Well, I have a theory--later. Jim did a bad act but probably is a real Medium. Debunkers need to come up with more proof then "there is no magick" to prove fakers are faking, and leave real magick workers alone!!

Now to my therory: What if there WERE a bunch of magickal people running around like in the TV show "Heroes"? Do you think they would want people to know it? Would it be dangerous to them? Would the Government have a problem with that? Yes, I think so!!! Notice that in all TV shows and movies with magickal people, there seems to be a government presence that is pursuing them. Why? Maybe this argument has a lot more importance then we think!!! Maybe there is an ulterior motive for setting up the argument Criss and Jim had on the show?

Bobb:

You idiots. Uri Geller cannot bend spoons or keys with his mind, nor can he make clocks start by thinking about them. The Amazing Randi exposed him years ago as did Johnny Carson. Geller has no more mental powers than Pee Wee Herman.

Chris mankey:

"Uri Geller (and creator of the show!), who is a legend in mentalism, and paved the road for guys like Angel. Bad form. Very bad form.
"
Uri geller is a legend of fraud and deceptions that's be exposed over and over again. Ever see he on the tonight show where Johnny carson and James randi exposed him?

"In the magic community, he's known as Criss "ANGLE". The guy can barely talk, he looks like he fell out of a 1989 Def Leopard video, and isn't nearly as inventive as ANY of the contestants he's judging."

Maybe you should see a therapist for your extreme anger problem! Do it before you hurt someone!

"Angel is a self-promoting, pompous ass- he does a "tribute" to Houdini, then tells the audience how he "one-upped" Houdini by doing the same stunt in half the time???!!"

But Uri Geller is a really great guy for using stage magic tricks and telling people he has really psychic powers! You're a fucking moron!

Aaron:

What Criss Angel did wasn't fair, because he didn't do the same thing to the other contestants.

If he would have posed it to each and every one of them, I'd say differently, but he did it in an effort to debunk that one guy.

Totally not cool, haven't watched it since.

nicky:

very wonderful

Pumpim:

I LOVE CISS ANGLE

Christi:

I agree that through the show, Criss was very self promoting. I don't think this was because he's self-absorbed however, but that he's simply the most current and most aciving Magician of Television. More than any other, if I remember correctly. side question, do you think houdini would want to be on TV that much? sorry... Random thought... Anyway, Fora ll the people saying there are camera tricks and stooges and whatnot, what about all the people in Times Square for the cement block escape? You can't really pay off half the state + some-odd number of tourists that came to see it throughout that demonstration.

And on that note, he calls them Demonstrations because he wants you o think about all the things it could be, Illusion, Escape or Magick. (Which I happen to belive the possibility of Magick, even after reading his book.) But people like Uri and Callahan tell you exactally what they want you to think. "I'm psychic" or "I'm talking to a dead guy" Yeah... That's not called direction or anything...

Max:

Well, Criss certainly wasn't the only one who found the act "comical"; I was giggling hysterically myself.

Gabelson:

The biggest phony, is Criss. His entire TV act could not be done without payrolled stooges and camera tricks. Criss also recently did a performance where HE claimed to channel the dead (for real). What a hypocrite.

I'm guessing you didn't watch it till the very end, where Criss revealed that it was all hoax? He has stated numerous times that he does not believe in supernatural abilities and will gladly expose those who claim otherwise.

That's already more honest than Angel, who can't do a single effect without trick photography, wires, or stooges.

You mean other magicians don't use wires? Or, maybe not "trick" photography, but avoid placing the cameras where people can actually see what they're doing?? It's called 'illusion' for a reason - we know that it's fake, the question is, how he did it.

I've seen some interviews where Angel revealed his tricks for the acts people were claiming to be all paid and composed with camera trickery. Some of the spectators must be "stooges", but I do think most of them are real.

Now, the question of his ego is a completely different matter.

Christi:

Yeah, I know... I'm posting again.

Anyway, what Max said (above) about there possibly being a few stooges is a very good point. Criss may be wealthy but he doesn't have a bottomless pocket, there is no way he'd be able to pay off literally thousands of people nearly per episode (which I think are generally shot in what... two weeks each?) I've only ever seen one or two people on more than one episode, and none of them were ever asked to help with the trick at all. They're just redicilously addicted obbsessive freakish fan people... Then there's the matter of the Cement Block Escape again, there was a live, non-Criss-Angel related camera covering the event --and the escape-- live. (Oops... did I say live twice? Silly me...)

Also... I love how totally silent the audiece was for that whole fight. Kinda funny :P

One thing I will say about Criss though, it even though it wasn't his place to call out a fellow Magician/artist, he had already said he would, almost like a warning, so it was Jimbo's own fault for not taking notice of Criss' statement. Criss always keeps his word. The world has been warned... (lol)

Johnnie:

Magic is real!! Repeat this 3 times and stand back because a multitude of rabbits are going to fly out of your ass!! It is entertainment and thought provoking as to how 'tricks/illusions' are accomplished
If you do not like it, watch the Food Network and amaze yourself as 3 hour meals are prepared within a 30 minute program.

Kaitlyn:

..As criss doesnt believe, I do believe that CERTAIN people have the ability to contact the dead, etc. And I believe in Mediums and all that crap - but i also believe it is completley easy to fake having these "supernatural" powers.
And Criss himself shows just how easy it is to fake this crap - because he admits himself the stuff he does DOES have a way[hence it being magic]. and he totally doesnt believe in anything supernatural.

I think his line was just being honest about his personal opinion on the act.. however I think it was a bit bias, considering he doesnt believe its possible.

besides, criss is a magician..he knows all the tricks etc and he knows that you dont need to have "supernatural powers" to complete these tricks..

however, i think it was a load of crap on the spot, clearly faked [coming from someone who believes in the supernatural] :]
I think BOTH took it too far.
but criss was completley right to say his opinion, what do people want judges to do, lie and forget being completley honest on whatt they think?

kristyn:

i have to say if that gay ass looking dude even put a finger on criss angel i would hunt him down and kick his fony ass ok thats how much i think criss angel is the best. k see ya

BOB:

I THANK WHEN THAT STOUPED GUY CALLED OUT CRISS WAS A LOT OF BULL CRAP!!! IF HE LADE A HAND ON HIM I WOULD HAVE HUTEN HIM DOWEN AND PUNCH HIM SO HARD HE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO MOVE FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE(I MEAN THAT). I ALSO THANK HE IS A FUCKEN IDEIT FOR DOING THAT SHIT.SO NEXT PERSON WHO SAYS SHIT ABOUT HIM IS ON THE TOP OF MY HATE LIST!!!!!!! GOT THAT!!!!
