Franken’s Senate Race Too Close to Call

Nov 5, 2008  •  Post A Comment

“Saturday Night Live” alum Al Franken is in a dead heat with Republican incumbent Norm Coleman in Minnesota’s Senate election, the Associated Press reports. The comedian-author, running on the Democratic ticket, is behind Coleman by 571 votes out of a total 2.9 million cast. Trailing both Franken and Coleman was the Independent Party’s Dean Barkley with 15% of the vote. “We won’t know for a little while who won the race, but at the end of the day we will know the voice of the electorate is clearly heard,” Franken said. The small margin between the two candidates is well within the state’s automatic recount threshold, which means a winner might not be announced until December, the newswire said. Before Coleman, the seat was held by Franken’s friend Paul Wellstone, who died in a 2002 plane crash.
