Simon Cowell could leave Fox’s “American Idol” at the end of this season for a starring role in a U.S. version of his hit British show “The X Factor,” reports the New York Post, citing a report in the Times of London.

Cowell’s "Idol" contract expires in May and negotiations on a new deal have dragged out for months.

Fox, "Idol" and Cowell's company wouldn’t comment.
