Rosie O’Donnell’s New Show Will Be Positioned as Oprah Replacement

The producers of Rosie O’Donnell’s new talk show, Dick Robertson and Scott Carlin, will pitch it as a replacement for “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” the New York Times reports.

Robertson told The Times: “This is a once-in-25-years opportunity. There is this gaping hole starting in September of 2011 when Oprah goes away. Who better to fill it than Rosie?”

Unlike in the latter days of O’Donnell’s previous daytime talk show, the new program won’t take on politics and controversial issues, Robertson said, calling the new version “a big, commercial, fun, uplifting show.”

When the news hit about O’Donnell returning to syndication, The Hollywood Reporter wrote on Monday that the new show is an unlikely replacement for “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” According to THR’s report, not only do some ABC stations already have other options to replace “Oprah,” but they were not always enamored of O’Donnell towards the end of her prior run, as the host turned more political and outspoken.

Clearly that’s the criticism that Robertson and Carlin hope to deflect.
