Laurie Bembenek, a former Playboy bunny and convicted murderer whose story was twice the focus of television movies, has died, reports the New York Post. She was 52.

Bembenek died from complications of hepatitis C and kidney failure, the story says.

Bembenek was portrayed first by Lindsay Frost of "Crossing Jordan" in the 1992 TV movie "Calendar Girl, Cop Killer? The Bambi Bembenek Story." Another TV movie, "Woman on Trial: The Lawrencia Bembenek Story," followed in 1993, when Tatum O’Neal played the part.

According to the Associated Press, Bembenek was convicted in 1982 of fatally shooting her husband’s ex-wife after he complained about his alimony payments. She maintained her innocence, and while serving a life sentence, she escaped prison and fled to Canada with her fiance, the brother of a fellow inmate, the AP reports.

Her escape prompted supporters to wear "Run Bambi RanRun" T-shirts, the story notes.
