Will Your SmartPhone Replace Your TV Remote Control?

Nov 1, 2010  •  Post A Comment

Many aspects of television have undergone change during the past decade — think of YouTube videos, Hulu and 3D television sets — but the most recent gadget to get an overhaul is the remote control, reports the New York Times.

Accroding to the article, “Everybody realizes that the remote control is the dinosaur of the consumer electronics industry,” says Strategy Analytics television analyst David Mercer. TV manufacturers are starting to respond to that, with Mitsubishi and Samsung developing smartphone remotes.

Meanwhile, Apple and Google TV’s small-screen offerings include phone apps to allow viewers to control their TVs through their smartphones, the story says. It points out that using your phone as a remote has an advantage, since if it gets lost, you just have to call it to hear where it is.

The demand for updated remotes might explode, given that Forrester Research forecasts that 43 million homes will have Internet-connected TVs by 2015, the article notes.
