ABC is developing two musical series, including one that would star a popular Tony-winning actress, reports Deadline.com.

According to the article, Idina Menzel, who won a Tony Award for her performance in "Wicked" as Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, "is headlining her own musical hourlong project, a mother-daughter relationship drama in the vein of ‘Gilmore Girls.’ It will star the Broadway actress as the single mother of a teenager who, to make ends meet, waits tables and performs at weddings and bar mitzvahs, odd jobs that Menzel herself worked early on while pursuing a Broadway career."

Menzel was recently on Fox’s "Glee," whose success as a series with music is inspiring other networks to try the format.

Furthermore, the story says that "Bob Kushell [‘Samantha Who’], who had been looking to do a musical series for the past 10 years, is writing the script for ABC Studios and will executive produce with David Knoller (Big Love). Menzel and her manager Heather Reynolds will serve as producers.

The second project is a half hour musical comedy, the article says, written by Robert Horn, who also wrote the Disney Channel musical movies, "Sharpay Fabulous" and "The Suite Life: The Movie."
