Elizabeth Edwards, the estranged wife of former presidential hopeful John Edwards, has died following a six-year struggle with breast cancer, ABC News reports. She was 61.

It was announced earlier this week that Edwards had stopped all cancer treatment. She was first diagnosed with cancer in 2004, the story says.

A friend of the Edwards family reportedly told ABC News that John Edwards was at her side during her final days.

Her family released a statement earlier this week that said in part: "Elizabeth has been advised by her doctors that further treatment of her cancer would be unproductive. She is resting at home with family and friends."
