In a surprise appearance, "CBS Evening News" anchor Katie Couric was on hand Tuesday night at a ceremony in New York to introduce the Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year, Drew Brees, reports TVNewser.

Couric emphasized Brees’ contributions to the city of New Orleans, both on the field and off.

“This night was about much more than football,” Couric said in her introduction. “It was a new beginning for a city that still desperately needed a second chance, and in Drew ‘Breesus,’ they saw the second coming. You gave a reason for all of us to believe. Very simply put, Drew–on and off the field–you kick ass.”

Dan Patrick, star of the syndicated/DirecTV daytime sports talk show "The Dan Patrick Show," was the emcee for the night’s festivities.
