MTV Caught in Abortion Debate Over New Show

Dec 28, 2010  •  Post A Comment

With a new show that features a teen who was first seen on MTV’s "16 and Pregnant," the network is now facing accusations that it’s promoting abortion, reports the New York Post.

The show, called "No Easy Decision," features 19-year-old Markai Durham, who finds out she’s pregnant again and deals with deciding whether or not to have the baby, the story says.

Because of the show’s unusual content, MTV has scheduled it at 11:30 p.m., past the bedtimes of the network’s younger fans.

Durham had a baby daughter in October 2009 and said she and her boyfriend had been using birth control when she got pregnant for the second time. Pro-life blogger Jill Stanek is criticizing the show’s official Web site for only linking to pro-choice groups and says the program was done in cooperation with a support group for teens who have had abortions, called Exhale.

  1. Poor MTV. People whine that their programming doesn’t take a more social consciousness angle, so they create 16 and Pregnant, a socially conscious hit show. Now they create a spinoff, in the same vein, and people complain it promotes abortion and a pro-choice agenda. THEY AREN’T THE SUNDAY SCHOOL NETWORK! It’s cable TV and it’s MTV; you’ve had since 1981 to move on.

  2. Somewhere, someplace someone is going to insist upon his or her right to be offended, no matter what side of this issue MTV lands on.
