The ESPN broadcast of the BCS National Championship kept the networks from aggressively going after the prime-time Nielsen ratings, according to TVbytheNumbers.com.

ABC counterprogrammed its Disney corporate cousin ESPN with original episodes of “The Bachelor” and “Castle” and came away with a win for the night, in both the adults 18-49 demo and total viewers. ABC averaged a 2.6 rating in 18-49, better than CBS’s 2.0 average, Fox’s 1.6, Univision’s 1.5 and NBC’s 0.9.

In total viewers, ABC led the way with an average of 8.7 million, beating CBS (7.7 million), Fox (5.5 million), Univision (3.8 million) and NBC (3.4 million).

At 8 p.m. ABC’s first hour of "The Bachelor" scored a 2.7 average rating in the 18-49 demographic, ahead of Fox’s "Lie to Me," which had a 1.6 in the same demo for the hour.

At 9 p.m. the second hour of "The Bachelor" had a 2.8 in the 18-49 demo, while a second episode of "Lie to Me" collected a 1.5 in the same demo for the hour.

The 10 p.m. hour was won by "Castle" on ABC with a 2.1 average rating in the 18-49 demo, up against all reruns.
