Two Major Networks Are Skipping 9/11 Programming on 9/11

Two major broadcast networks are skipping airing programming this Sunday, Sept. 11, tied to the 10-year anniversary of the 9/11/2001 terrorist attacks, reports The New York Times.

The two networks are Fox and NBC.

Furthermore, pay cabler HBO, which has a long history of airing documentaries, has also decided to take a pass on the commemoration during Sunday’s prime time.

NBC’s Sunday night programming is dedicated to a football game, the first Sunday evening broadcast of the NFL’s regular season. Fox will air its standard Sunday night schedule: animated shows "The Simpsons" and "Family Guy" and the season finale of the sketch-comedy show "In the Flow with Affion Crockett.”

HBO will air the season finales of two of its high-profile shows, "True Blood" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm," and the series finale–after eight seasons–of "Entourage," the story points out.

“The right thing for us is not to pre-empt just to have a dark night or repeats of something else,” said HBO programming President Michael Lombardo. “It’s to continue with our schedule for those people who are looking to continue with their life and to have an alternative to more topical viewing. But it was, obviously, thought through."

NBC said the NFL has a "number of events planned throughout the day", while Fox said the Fox News Channel would provide coverage of the 9/11 anniversary. MSNBC and CNBC, cable-network siblings to NBC, will also air 9/11 programming, the piece notes.

  1. Must be “fishing for a story” day. In reading the last paragraph, there is no story here. Was it ever implied that the mother network was expected to carry 9/11 anniversary coverage? Times have changed. NBC and FOX each have their news channel on it, so they can focus on other forms of entertainment. Besides, this isn’t a “breaking” hard news story any more. It’s a revisit to a tragic event. Rest assured, we’ll have plenty of 9/11 coverage this weekend.
