CBS’s ‘Early Show’ Adds Two Familiar Names to Its On-Air Lineup as Show Retools

CBS’s "The Early Show" has made two key hires as the low-rated morning show gets a makeover geared to hard news, reports Brian Stelter in The New York Times.

The show announced the hiring of Charlie Rose and Gayle King, the story reports. CBS is creating a two-hour news show that will use a conversational approach like "Morning Joe" on MSNBC, the story notes.

Rose, King and other new hires will join current “Early Show” co-hosts Erica Hill and Jeff Glor on a new set in New York, the piece adds. CBS declined to comment on the changes.

Neither Charlie Rose, who hosts the PBS interview show "Charlie Rose," nor Gayle King, who hosts a show on OWN, is a proven ratings draw, the article points out.

  1. … because when you think about hard news, you think of Rose and King. As a friend of mine points out, when this fails, we can expect CBS to say it’s because nobody wants hard news in the morning, rather than that they made such a tentative move.
