Apple introduced its new iPad today, rolling out such features as voice dictation, an improved “retina” display, a faster processor and access to faster cellular networks, USA Today reports.

applenewipad.jpgAppearing in San Francisco to present the new device, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the release takes the iPad to “a whole new level, and redefines the category Apple created with the original iPad.”

The story reports: “As with the previous iPad, the new iPad starts at $499 with 16 GB of storage for a Wi-Fi model, or $629 to get cellular Internet access. It will be available on March 16.”

With sales of more than 55 million units so far — and that figure expected to surpass 100 million by the end of 2012 — the iPad is the most successful tech product of the past few years, the story notes. Apple first introduced it in April 2010.

The report adds: “One of the biggest selling points for the new iPad is the sharper ‘retina’ display, which was first introduced on the iPhone 4 in 2010. Most HD TVs are 1920×1080 resolution, but the sharper resolution of the iPad is 2048×1530, or ‘1 million more pixels than HDTV,’ said Apple Senior Vice President Phil Schiller.”

The improved processor is touted as being four times faster than the processor on the earlier iPad. However, the new device does not include the Siri digital personal assistant found on the iPhone 4S, settling instead for voice dictation.

The new iPad also features the upgraded camera found on the iPhone 4S. USA Today notes: “The 5-megapixel camera has built-in image stabilization, to help eliminate the shakes, and also offers the ability to shoot video in full 1080p HD resolution.”

A big difference between the new device and older units is the ability to access 4G networks, which are offered regionally by AT&T and Verizon. Older iPads only have 3G capability.
