CBS has pulled the plug on a drama pilot amid a legal hassle over alleged similarities between the project and an Oscar-winning film, Deadline.com reports.

Rather than face a court battle over the similarities between CBS’s "Quean" and "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," Joel Silver’s Silver Pictures has decided to cease production on “Quean.”

“Dragon Tattoo,” released in the U.S. in 2011, was nominated for five Academy Awards, winning the award for film editing.

"The L Word" creator Ilene Chaiken wrote "Quean," in which a young woman, a grungy hacker, teams with an Oakland cop to solve crimes. Sony Pictures threatened to sue because the plot seemed too close to "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," as well as its two sequels. The other two movies have already been greenlighted, the story notes.

The U.S. version of "Tattoo" was based on a book written by Swedish journalist turned novelist Stieg Larsson. Larsson finished "Tattoo" and its two sequels before he died in 2004. The trilogy became international best sellers when they were published posthumously, and subsequently the three Swedish movies based on the books had a huge internatioinal following as well. 

Sony produced the U.S. movie version of "Tattoo."

Chaiken attempted to alter her work on the CBS drama, but Sony was dissatisfied and still threatened to fight it out in court.
