A British pop group has made history, pulling off an achievement that no other British group in history has been able to pull off, BBC News reports.

The group One Direction had its first album debut at No. 1 in the U.S. on the Billboard 200 album chart. The album, “Up All Night,” is the first debut by a British group to do so — even with a long history of “British Invasion” bands that has included the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and many other hugely successful groups.

The album debuted with sales of more than 176,000 copies in the U.S.

One Direction had its first live performance on U.S. television last week, with more than 10,000 fans turning out in New York for its performance in Rockefeller Plaza on NBC’s “Today” show.

Britain’s Bradenton Herald adds: “One Direction gained notoriety in 2010 after appearing on the ‘X Factor’ UK. Their global smash debut album, “Up All Night,” entered the charts at #1 in 11 countries and has been certified triple platinum in Ireland, double platinum in the UK & Australia, and platinum in New Zealand. … In the US, ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ sold more than 131,000 copies in its first week, debuting at #12 on the Billboard Digital Songs chart. Their #28 debut on the Billboard Hot 100 marked the highest debut from a British group since the Spice Girls in 1998.”
