NBC’s bubble show “Community” saw a surge in viewers as it returned from hiatus Thursday, and the series premiere of “Missing” gave ABC its biggest audience in its time period in 14 months. Both series aired at 8 p.m.

With the disclaimer that numbers for CBS might be adjusted more than usual due to live coverage of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, TVbytheNumbers.com reported that Fox won the night in the key 18-49 demo. Fox finished prime time with a 3.4 average rating in the demo in Nielsen overnights, followed by ABC (2.4 average), NBC (1.9) and CBS (1.7).

Fox’s one-hour “American Idol” was the top show of the night with a 4.5 average rating in the 18-49 demo, but that was down 8% from a week ago, continuing “Idol’s” recent downward trend.

NBC reported that "Community" (2.2/7 in 18-49, 4.9 million viewers) delivered NBC’s highest non-sports rating in the 8 p.m. Thursday time period in nearly 14 months, since Jan. 27, 2011. Airing against basketball on CBS instead of CBS’s usual comedy lineup, “Community” surged 46% from its previous original episode, which aired in December.

ABC announced that the debut of “Missing” was TV’s most-watched drama premiere during the opening hour of prime time in a year and a half, and gave the network its biggest audience in the time period in 14 months. “Missing” averaged a 2.0 rating in viewers 18-49 with 10.6 million total viewers.
