Hall of Fame Boxing Broadcaster Dies

A sports broadcaster and journalist who specialized in boxing and became an icon in the business has died. Bert Sugar died Sunday in New York at the age of 75, reports FoxSports.com.

Sugar suffered a heart attack but had been diagnosed with lung cancer. With is trademark fedora and cigar, Sugar was a familiar face on boxing broadcasts. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2005.

Jack Hirsch, the president of the Boxing Writers Association of America, said of him, ”Bert was obviously a showman in the way he did things outwardly, very flamboyant, but in quiet moments I found him to be an extremely modest individual.”

Over the years, Sugar wrote more than 80 books about boxing, including “The 100 Greatest Boxers of All Time,” and appeared on hundreds of TV broadcasts. He was also in the movies "Rocky Balboa," "The Great White Hype" and "Night and the City."
