It’s Starting to Look Like a Trend in Television: Netflix Sets Sights on Possible Rescue of Another Struggling Network Series

Signs that TV is shifting from a broadcast and cable model to a new digital platform continue to surface. With talks already under way for a possible acquisition of Fox’s canceled “Terra Nova,” Netflix now appears to have its sights set on another struggling broadcast show — and this one hasn’t been canceled yet.

Deadline.com reports that the online streaming and DVD rental service is interested in “The River,” a horror series that has had a hard time finding an audience on ABC. Netflix has had talks with the show’s producer, ABC Studios, about keeping the drama going online, the story reports.

The sources for the story characterize the talks as exploratory, but Netflix thinks a serialized show in the horror/thriller genre might do well on its service.

ABC has not announced the fate of "The River" yet, but it is not expected to receive a second-season order from the network.
