Two Radio Stations Dump Rush Limbaugh’s Show; More Advertisers Sever Ties

The bloodbath continues for conservative talk host Rush Limbaugh’s radio show, which continues to lose advertisers — and now has lost two radio stations — in the wake of a verbal attack by the host on a law student who testified about birth control.

The count of advertisers bailing out on the show has climbed to nine, the New York Daily News reports. Meanwhile, radio stations WBEC in Pittsfield, Mass., and KPUA in Hilo, Hawaii, have dropped the show.

Said WBEC General Manager Peter Barry: “This time he’s taken it too far.”

Stamps.com pulled out of the show as an advertiser, the story reports, with a spokesman saying: “Rush Limbaugh’s recent comments do not align with our company values.”

Limbaugh, who has apologized for his comments, was defiant on Monday, downplaying the loss of advertisers. “They have profited handsomely from reaching you,” he said, according to the report. “Now they have decided they don’t want to reach you anymore and we will replace them with advertisers who do.”

As reported previously, Limbaugh called law student Sandra Fluke a “slut” and a “prostitute” after she testified before lawmakers in Washington about health care policies regarding insurance coverage of birth control. He later apologized, but his remarks triggered a flood of advertiser defections.

Fluke appeared on ABC’s “The View” following Limbaugh’s apology, the report notes. “I don’t think a statement like this, saying his choice of words was not the best, changes anything,” she said on the show.

Clear Channel, which broadcasts the radio show, has stood behind Limbaugh.

  1. Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy, he should have been silenced years ago. Saying I am sorry doesn’t make the situation better just don’t say it.

  2. I love the feigned-selective outrage from the Left in defense of this poor Political Operative posing as a Student.
Rush stepped over the line with the language that he used as compared to those commentators and “comedians” on the left who regularly show zero decorum towards the women & minorities on the right.
Rush will experience about 15 minutes of pain from this incident. The vacuum created by departed advertisers will be filled in the blink of an eye and he will resume his post as the exposer of the liberal hypocrisy

  3. Sadly, cable guy you are right about others filling the void. He is a spokesman for the 1% of which he is a member. Oh yeah, the 1% own the media, bottom line is all that matters.
He and every other extremist right or left that is given unchallenged speech on public affairs issues is exactly what is stopping this country dead in its tracks. I long for the days when a William F Buckley and Daniel Patrick Moynehan could sensibly debate real issues and generally come to some meaningful concensus at the end.
And please, don’t tell me about hypocrisy when you are defending a drug addict who was recorded as saying that all drug addicts deserve to be in jail or dead.

  4. Does this mean all the liberals who’ve excoriated people on the right then later “apologized” should be silenced as well?
Two stations is far from being “silenced,” and Rush owns his show, so the loss of sponsors won’t hurt him or the show for that matter.
Further, those sponsors had been advertising to reach Rush’s audience, most of whom will now boycott the companies in question.
Sponsors can do what they like, but there will be a downside for them as well.

  5. Rush is an ass, but “silenced”? Really? I find that a poor choice of words, whatever your intended meaning may have been. NO ONE should be silenced (but plenty should be ignored).

  6. He lost two of his over 600 stations? I am reminded of Citizen Kane. “You’re right, I did lose a million dollars last year. I expect to lose a million dollars this year. I expect to lose a million dollars next year. You know, Mr. Thatcher, at the rate of a million dollars a year, I’ll have to close this place in… 60 years.”

  7. Bloodbath? Why are 2 stations lost out of hundreds upon hundreds cast as a bloodbath?

  8. One of those fleeing advertisers got a rude shock after they dumped Limbaugh. Carbonite saw its stock price drop 12% on Monday and Tuesday. Could be a coincidence, or not. http://dailycaller.com/2012/03/06/investors-flee-carbonite-after-limbaugh-announcement/
