Why the Surviving Monkees Will Skip Davy Jones’ Funeral

The three surviving members of the 1960s pop band the Monkees have decided not to attend the funeral of Davy Jones, the AP reports.

Jones, one of the four original Monkees, died of a heart attack late last month, as previously reported.

Group member Micky Dolenz explained the decision, saying the presence of the group members would probably create unwanted attention and be a distraction to Jones’ family during its time of grief.

The story reports: “He and fellow Monkees Peter Tork and Michael Nesmith have talked of attending one of the memorials that Jones’ family is planning to hold in New York and in the late singer’s native England, Dolenz said. And he added he’s considering organizing a memorial himself for Jones’ friends in Los Angeles.”

Questions have arisen as to whether the remaining Monkees might perform at any of Jones’ memorials — or for that matter whether they will perform in the future. The questions remain unanswered, but Dolenz did address them.

"The three of us, Mike and Peter and I, we have never worked together just as a threesome,” Dolenz said. “Mostly it was Peter, David and I and then Mike would join us.”

He added: “We’ve been talking, we’ve been communicating, but it’s way too early, I think, to project or predict anything like that."

A private funeral for Jones’ family members was set to take place this week in Florida.
