DirecTV Slashes Price of Football Package Bloomberg
In a move designed to broaden its audience, DirecTV has cut the price of its Sunday football package by 40% for existing customers and will continue to offer it free for a year for new customers, reports Bloomberg.
The NFL Sunday Ticket package, which gives access to all out-of-market regular-season National Football League games, now costs $199.95 instead of $325 for existing customers, the story says.
With additional access to the games via mobile devices, the package costs $299.95, the piece adds.
DirecTV has held rights to the games since 1994, which has given it a competitive advantage against rivals such as Comcast and Dish, according to the story. A promotion that started last year that gave the package free to new customers helped DirecTV gain a net 327,000 U.S. subscribers in the third quarter, its biggest boost since 2009, the piece adds.
