‘Hunger Games’ Sequel Finds High-Profile Director

Since the director of the megahit “Hunger Games” declined to helm the movie’s sequel “Catching Fire,” the principals behind the series have been scrambling to find a replacement. That search is apparently over now, with the team settling on Francis Lawrence, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Lawrence, the director of “Water for Elephants” and “I Am Legend,” replaces Gary Ross, who directed “Hunger Games.” The Lionsgate project is already on a tight timeline, with a release date of Nov. 22, 2013, reportedly locked in.

Lionsgate reportedly was also considering “Moneyball” director Bennett Miller before deciding on Lawrence. Miller’s busier schedule may have tilted the balance in favor of Lawrence, with Miller currently involved in “Foxcatcher.”

Lawrence has also directed music videos for Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez and Green Day, the story notes.
