Cher’s Anti-Romney Tweet Invokes Outcry Among Mormons

Jul 2, 2012  •  Post A Comment

Oscar winner Cher found herself in an Internet controversy involving the Mormon Church after she tweeted a comment about Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

On Friday, the singer tweeted about President Obama, saying, "I Feel if he doesn’t get all his DUCKS IN A ROW we’ll b forced 2 listen 2Uncaring Richy Rich! The whitest man in MAGIC UNDERWEAR in the WH."

The reference to magic underwear was interpreted as a slur against Mormons. Both men and women of the church wear garments that are sometimes called "celestial underwear" or "temple garments." The phrase "magic underwear" is deemed offensive and derogatory.

Cher received numerous responses indicating her readers were upset by her comment. She was labeled an "anti-Mormon bigot" by a site called Twitchy that tracks newsworthy Twitter posts.

  1. I am glad the Mormon Church is making a big deal about Cher’s tweets. I didn’t care that Mitt was a Mormon, but now I need to know more about the “magic underwear” they have to wear. Maybe his being a Mormon is a big deal!

  2. Uh, yeah. Like Jews wear kippahs. And Catholics wear crucifixes. How dare they?! Weak argument. Each religion has it’s own thing. Mormons just happen to have something they don’t wear openly. Big deal.

Cher being racist in public? That’s what I’m getting. Maybe send her back to Palm Springs for some therapy.
Cher, you just lost the old fag’s respect! Grow up hunny!
