Comcast Selling A&E Stake for $2.8 Billion — What’s Behind the Sudden Surge in Value?

Jul 6, 2012  •  Post A Comment

Comcast is selling NBCUniversal’s 15% stake in A&E Television Networks for $2.8 billion, or 40% more than the value Comcast assigned to the stake just two months ago, reports the New York Post.

The increase in value appears to be due to History’s "Hatfields & McCoys," the story notes. The show drew an average of 14 million viewers during its May 28-30 run, which in turn could have boosted the value of A&E Television Networks, the story says.

Fellow A&E Television Networks owners Disney-ABC and Hearst Corp. are buying Comcast’s stake and splitting it, the piece notes. While the price has been agreed to, other details, most likely retransmission fees, are still being negotiated, according to the article. Hearst owns NBC-affiliated stations.
