Fox has confirmed a high-profile celebrity who will be joining the judging panel for “American Idol” during the show’s upcoming season. USA Today reports that the job has officially gone to pop star Mariah Carey.

We reported this morning that Carey was close to a deal. Fox Entertainment boss Kevin Reilly made it official during the network’s presentation today at the Television Critics Association press tour.

Reilly reportedly called Carey from the stage during the presentation. Said Carey: "I am so excited to be on ‘Idol.’ I can’t wait to get started in a couple of months."

The report adds: “But Reilly said ‘there’s nothing else to confirm’ about the judges or tweaks to the format of the show, or whether Randy Jackson will return. ‘The ratings are down, but not being the only game in town, we need to keep things fresh.’”

As previously reported, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler have left after two seasons as judges on the show.
