A Los Angeles television station fell victim last week to a hoax reporting that a sequel to the Coen Brothers’ 1998 cult hit "The Big Lebowski" was ready to start filming in October, reports Mediabistro.com.

KCBS-TV, the Los Angeles CBS O&O, picked up the story from the Examiner.com website and reported the news that Jeff Bridges would be reprising his role as “The Dude.” However, the station later learned — as did the Examiner.com website — that the story was based on a fake report.

Mediabistro reports: “KCBS excitedly reported the return of ‘The Dude,’ sourcing the story to the Examiner, only to eventually find out that the report was based on a hoax (and not a very complex one at that).

“KCBS based its article on an Examiner post written by a guy whose title is Phoenix Cannabis Culture Examiner, and who runs a blog called WeedGeist. His story, in turn, appears to have been taken from a post on the website Super Official News with the byline ‘The Ass Press.’”

KCBS posted an update on Thursday to say that the station had reported a bogus story. The station changed its online headline on the story from “’The Dude’ is Back! ‘Big Lebowski 2’ to Start Filming in October” to "‘Big Lebowski’ Fans? That Sequel Isn’t on the Horizon.”

The Examiner site ran its own correction, pointing out that this isn’t the first false report of a “Lebowski” sequel. The website added this editor’s note: “Sorry to disappoint but it’s just not true. ‘Big Lebowski 2’ is not in the works. As everyone knows, the first rule of the Internet is to not believe what you read on the Internet. This story broke that rule, and for that, we’re sorry. We’re in good company, at least. In 2011, CNN.com first ‘broke’ the news about a ‘Big Lebowski’ sequel, but the media giant quickly retracted its blog item. However, nothing ever dies on the Internet; satirical site SuperOfficialNews.com resurrected the pesky rumor on Wednesday, snookering this Examiner who loves The Dude, White Russians and bowling.”
