ABC Closing In on NBC in Evening News Ratings

ABC News is touting gains against segment leader NBC in the battle for evening news ratings. For the week of Oct. 22, “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” hit season highs in total viewers, with 7.59 million viewers, and the key news demo of adults 25-54, with 1.89 million and a 1.6 average rating/7 share, to close the gap on NBC. Numbers are based on Nielsen live+same day figures.

NBC still led, averaging 8.03 million total viewers and 2.21 million in the 25-54 demo with a 1.9 average rating/7 share. CBS came in third with 6.37 million total viewers and 1.70 million viewers 25-54 with a 1.4 average rating/5 share.

“ABC World News” narrowed the gap significantly with “NBC Nightly News” from the previous week — by 45% in total viewers (439,000 vs. 805,000 for the week of Oct. 15) and by 30% in adults 25-54 (321,000 vs. 459,000).

ABC was up week-to-week — by 8% in total viewers (from 7.05 million the week of Oct. 15) and by 11% in the 25-54 demo (from 1.71 million).

The Tuesday, Oct. 23, edition of “ABC World News” delivered the strongest numbers of the season in both total viewers (8.16 million) and adults 25-54 (2.09 million).
