A cable drama series that had its season premiere Sunday is the top-rated program so far this fall in the key demo of adults 18-49, according to AMC. The series is AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” which delivered a 7.3 average rating in viewers 18-49 for the 9 p.m. ET season three premiere.

Citing Nielsen live plus same day figures, AMC reports that’s the best number of the season on cable or broadcast, excluding sports.

Cumulative numbers for the night, with two additional airings, brought the show’s total for Sunday to 10.3 million in the 18-49 demo, and 8.6 million in adults 25-54.

The premiere delivered 10.9 million total viewers, with that total climbing to 15.2 million for the three airings. Those numbers are up more than 50% from season two, AMC reports.

The premiere also ranks as the top drama telecast in basic cable history in total viewers, according to the network.

  1. I’m not surprised at this. It goes to show, if you deliver good stories, people will tune in. Not every show has to be a reality show to get people interested.
