On a Thursday night when the broadcast ratings were tweaked by the vice presidential debate and by a live NFL Network game, CBS came away with a win for the night while the CW continued its recent surge, TVbytheNumbers.com reports.

But it was a rough night for ABC, where the new drama series “Last Resort” dropped to a 1.6 average rating in the key 18-49 demo, down from a 1.9 a week earlier.

The CW continued to have a good week. After premiering its new drama “Arrow” to big numbers Wednesday night, as previously reported, the network had a solid premiere for its new “Beauty and the Beast”: a 1.3 average rating in 18-49 with 3.2 million total viewers. The season premiere of “The Vampire Diaries” delivered a 1.6 in the demo, up from a 1.5 last year, with 3.5 million total viewers.

Citing Nielsen overnights, TVbytheNumbers reports that CBS averaged a 2.7 rating for prime time in the 18-49 demo, followed by Fox (2.4 average), NBC (1.9), ABC (1.7), CW (1.4) and Univision (1.4). CBS also led total viewers with 9.4 million, followed by ABC (6.9 million), Fox (6.8 million), NBC (5.7 million), Univision (3.5 million) and CW (3.3 million).

Numbers for the debate were close among the broadcast nets, with CBS and NBC both pulling 2.1 averages in 18-49, followed by Fox with a 2.0 and ABC with a 1.8. The commercial-free broadcast doesn’t figure into final national ratings.

Among regular programs, CBS’s “The Big Bang Theory” led the way with a 4.2 — down from a 4.9 a week ago. “Two and a Half Men” delivered a 3.4, down from a 3.6 last week.

Fox’s “The X Factor” pulled a 2.9 in 18-49, down from a 3.2 a week ago.

Numbers will be subject to more than the usual adjustments due to the live debate and NFL coverage.
