With 'Munsters' Series Dead, NBC Will Air Pilot as Halloween Special THR
NBC, trying to figure out a way to recoup its $10 million investment in its ill-fated reboot of "The Munsters," will air the project's pilot as a Halloween special, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The pilot, which was in development for years, will air Friday, Oct. 26, at 8 p.m., slotted before "Grimm." NBC declined to comment, the piece notes.
The update from writer-producer Bryan Fuller and director Bryan Singer reportedly failed to live up to the network's expectations, and Fuller and Singer are said to have held different views about the project's style, the story notes.
The new “Munsters” stars Jerry O'Connell as Herman Munster, a role made famous by Fred Gwynne, and Portia de Rossi as Lily Munster, taking over for Yvonne De Carlo.

I wish more unsold pilots could air as specials -- imagine a summer series of nothing BUT unsold pilots. Kind of like a theater program of one-act plays. Having viewed network pilots for years (in a previous job), I know there's a LOT of good work in shows that aren't picked up, and I always wished there was a way to get them before a viewing audience....

CBS actually tried that one over a summer... I'd love to see some of these shows I hear about but never make it to air

I wish they would give this one another chance and redo the pilot. I think it has great potential. They shouldn't kill it because the pilot didn't work. Look how many successful shows had bad pilots that were redone.

"Seinfeld" started as a failed pilot when NBC aired "The Seinfeld Chronicals" back in the late 80s.
The networks used to air failed pilots on a regular basis in the summertime many years ago, sometimes as limited-run summer series.
