"Downton Abbey" creator Julian Fellowes has been signed by NBC to create a period drama set in the Gilded Age of New York City, reports Bill Carter in The New York Times.

The drama, to be produced by NBC Universal Television, will be called "The Gilded Age." The network described it as an "epic tale of the princes of the American Renaissance, and the vast fortunes they made — and spent — in late 19th century New York.”

Fellowes will continue in his role as executive producer of "Downton Abbey," which, as previously reported, was recently renewed for a fourth season.
