Oprah Winfrey Health Scare Revealed; Also: Will She Shut Down O Magazine? Huffington Post, NYT
Oprah Winfrey shared news of a recent health scare while attending a conference, announcing “out of nowhere” that she had been concerned she might have breast cancer before learning it was a false alarm, The Huffington Post reports, citing an interview with Winfrey in The New York Times.
The conference, for O, The Oprah Magazine, took place in October in Los Angeles, but news of the health scare came as a revelation in The Times interview, published today. Another revelation in the piece concerns the magazine, with Winfrey revealing that she is considering shutting down the publication if it begins to lose money.
According to The Times, Winfrey’s health announcement at the conference took even her best friend, Gayle King, by surprise. “When Ms. King grew visibly upset, one woman chided Ms. Winfrey for not telling her friend ahead of time and ordered her to apologize to Ms. King -- all before an audience,” The Times reports.
The report adds: “Ms. Winfrey also did not hide her dissatisfaction with the criticism she had faced. She told the audience, ‘The press tried to cut me off at the knees’ in its coverage of OWN, and bristled at questions about the challenges her magazine confronted.”
Regarding the magazine, Winfrey said, "I'm not interested, you know, in bleeding money.”
“It's not clear if Oprah would end the magazine altogether, or follow in the footsteps of Newsweek and switch to an all-digital edition,” HuffPost notes.
