Gold Medalist With the Oddest Nickname of Them All — ‘America’s Sexiest Douchebag’ — Gets His Own Show

E! has ordered a reality series featuring an athlete who has been called “America’s Sexiest Douchebag,” reports EW.com’s Inside TV. The six-episode series, "What Would Ryan Lochte Do," features the Olympic swimming champion as he trains and searches for the "right gal," the piece notes.

"A sneak peek of the show was screened for reporters at E!’s TV critics press tour panel in Pasadena. Lochte came off more than a little dense. Sort of like a male Jessica Simpson (a swimbo?)," James Hibberd writes in the report.

Lochte has been one of the stars of the past three Olympic Games for the U.S. swimming team, winning four medals in Beijing in 2008 and five more in London last year — after winning two medals in Athens in 2004. He has seven individual medals — second all time in men’s swimming — and a total of five Olympic gold medals.

But even E! President Suzanne Kolb seems to agree that Lochte isn’t exactly the brightest crayon in the box. Kolb told EW: “How many people fall in love with the smartest guy in the class? They fall for the fastest swimmer.”

The piece quotes Lochte, presumably in response to his “douchebag” designation, saying: “I don’t even know what is a douchebag. I don’t even know what it means.”

“The show represents a bit of a departure for E!, which typically has shows starring famous (or wannabe famous) females,” Hibberd writes. “Then again, Lochte has no shortage of female appeal.”

Kolb underscored that point in a statement, saying: “He is an incredibly endearing personality who is sexy, entertaining and fun. Watching this show, I believe people will fall into three categories: They want to be him, sleep with him or mother him.”

The series will debut in April.
