ESPN has severed its relationship with a commentator after he talked on the air about whether the Washington Redskins’ rookie quarterback, Robert Griffin III, is a “brother” or a “cornball brother,” The Huffington Post reports.

As we reported previously, the commentator, Rob Parker, drew criticism over the comments he made in a December installment of ESPN’s “First Take.” Parker appeared to question Griffin’s blackness, mentioning Griffin’s “white fiancee” and questioning whether he is “down with the cause” and whether he is “one of us.”

Parker received a 30-day suspension from ESPN following the remarks, The Huffington Post reports. The network followed up Tuesday, announcing that Parker’s contract had expired and would not be picked up.

Parker’s commentary appeared to be a response to comments Griffin made in an interview with USA Today. Griffin told the publication: "For me, you don’t ever want to be defined by the color of your skin. You want to be defined by your work ethic, the person that you are, your character, your personality. That’s what I’ve tried to go out and do."

Huffington Post notes: “Parker seemed to take these comments about transcending race as a repudiation by Griffin of the African-American community.”
