Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln” positioned itself at the head of the pack of nominees for the 85th Academy Awards, receiving 12 nominations today, including best picture, CNN reports.

Spielberg earned a nomination for best director, while the film’s other key nods included Daniel Day-Lewis for best actor, Sally Field for best supporting actress, Tommy Lee Jones for best supporting actor and Tony Kushner for best adapted screenplay.

"Life of Pi" was close behind, scoring 11 nominations, including best picture, along with best director for Ang Lee.

“As always, there were a handful of surprises,” the story reports. “The most notable, perhaps, was the showing by the small independent film ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild.’ Its 9-year-old star, Quvenzhane Wallis, earned a nomination for best actress, becoming the youngest person ever in that category. In addition, the film was nominated for best picture, best director (Benh Zeitlin) and best adapted screenplay — four nominations in all.”

One surprise was the lack of a nomination for Tom Hooper, director of “Les Miserables,” for best director — even though the film received eight nominations. But Hooper wasn’t alone in being spurned, among directors of best picture nominees.

“Neither Quentin Tarantino nor Kathryn Bigelow received best director nominations, though their films — ‘Django Unchained’ and ‘Zero Dark Thirty,’ respectively — received best picture nominations,” the report notes. “The snub of Bigelow, who won an Oscar for ‘The Hurt Locker,’ was particularly surprising, as she and her film have dominated critics’ lists during awards season.”

The best picture nominees are: "Amour," "Argo," "Beasts of the Southern Wild," "Django Unchained," "Les Miserables," "Life of Pi," "Lincoln," "Silver Linings Playbook," "Zero Dark Thirty."

Best actor nominees: Bradley Cooper, "Silver Linings Playbook"; Daniel Day-Lewis, "Lincoln"; Hugh Jackman, "Les Miserables"; Joaquin Phoenix, "The Master"; Denzel Washington, "Flight."

Best actress nominees: Jessica Chastain, "Zero Dark Thirty"; Jennifer Lawrence, "Silver Linings Playbook"; Emmanuelle Riva, "Amour"; Quvenzhane Wallis, "Beasts of the Southern Wild"; Naomi Watts, "The Impossible."

The Oscars ceremony is set for Feb. 24 at the Dolby Theatre (formerly the Kodak Theatre) in Los Angeles, to be aired live on ABC.
