The original Batmobile from the 1960s ABC television series was auctioned Saturday for $4.6 million, Deadline.com reports. The sale took place at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction.
“Bidding lasted about 4 minutes and the winning bid was $4.2 million before fees were assessed,” the story reports.
George Barris, the car’s designer, was the seller.
“Barris bought the 1955 Lincoln Futura Concept car for $1 from the Ford Motor Co. and was given $15,000 and 15 days to gadgetize the handmade 19-foot two-seater,” the piece reports. “Some observers had predicted the car would sell for as much as $5 million.”
The TV series aired from 1966-1968.
