Huell Howser, who hosted a series of successful public television series showcasing California, has died, The Huffington Post reports.

Howser, 67, died Sunday evening in his home of natural causes, the story reports. He hosted a string of shows including “California’s Gold,” a travel program based at Los Angeles station KCET-TV.

“A spokesperson from KCET confirmed to The Huffington Post that Huell died of natural causes, and that his death caught many at the studio by surprise,” the publication reports. “KCET nightly news show ‘SoCal Connected’ plans to honor Howser with a special segment during Monday’s broadcast (on at 5:30 p.m. and 10 p.m.). The studio will also create a site for fans to share memories of Howser. To stay informed about the online memorial, check out kcet.org.”

Howser’s other PBS series included "Visiting with Huell Howser" and "Videolog."

Below is a favorite segment of "Videolog" from 1988, called "Elephant Man":

  1. Oh I liked Huell Howser. I watched his show often and got lots of ideas on where to visit around CA. Thats a shame.. he seemed like a genuine, friendly and decent man.
