AMC’s ‘Breaking Bad’ Finds Cable Home for Syndication Run — With a Marathon to Kick Things Off

AMC’s perennial Emmy contender “Breaking Bad” has found an outlet for its move into syndication. The drama series will move to Sundance Channel, which acquired the rights to the first four seasons of the show, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Sundance will launch the show’s run in marathon fashion, starting Monday, March 4, with the pilot at 11 p.m.

“Breaking Bad” has had a major presence at the Emmy Awards since 2008, hauling in three Emmys for lead actor Bryan Cranston along with two supporting actor trophies for Aaron Paul and a number of other wins — not to mention three nominations for best drama series (without a win) and many other nominations, in directing, cinematography, acting, editing and other categories.

Sundance Channel GM and Executive VP Sarah Barnett commented: "’Breaking Bad’ has become a benchmark for storytelling at its finest, and we are proud to air this series as we embark on our own scripted programming with the upcoming debut of ‘Rectify,’ which is produced by the same incredible team behind ‘Breaking Bad.’ We are looking forward to giving viewers another opportunity to catch up with what has been called TV’s best drama."

THR notes: “The ‘Breaking Bad’ pickup for Sundance comes as a bit of a surprise considering that Netflix has become the go-to market for heavily serialized dark dramas, which don’t typically repeat well.”

“Breaking Bad” will initially air in two-hour blocks leading out from Sundance originals — following “The Staircase: Last Chance” March 4 and 11, “Top of the Lake” from March 18 to April 15 and “Rectify” from April 22 to May 27.
