A beloved former "Saturday Night Live" cast member, who appeared on the sketch comedy show in the 1980s before going on to a film career along with other successful TV ventures, is back in the NBC fold.

Emmy winner Martin Short has been cast in an untitled NBC project from comedian John Mulaney, according to The Hollywood Reporter’s Live Feed.

Short will play Mulaney’s boss, Lou Cannon, a game show host for whom Mulaney writes jokes, the story adds. The project is loosely based on Mulaney’s life, the piece notes.

Among the show’s executive producers is Lorne Michaels, a longtime friend of Short’s, although Michaels wasn’t working on "Saturday Night Live" when Short was a cast member in 1984-85, according to New York Magazine.

Short, whose movie career includes “Father of the Bride” and “Three Amigos,” received an Emmy in 1983 as part of the writing team behind the TV show “SCTV Network.” He has a number of other Emmy nominations, including one for outstanding supporting actor for the FX series “Damages” in 2010.
