Wednesday night’s season premiere of “Survivor: Caramoan: Fans vs. Favorites” had to be a big disappointment for CBS. The franchise reality show had the lowest-rated premiere in its long history, based on Nielsen overnights.

TVbytheNumbers.com reports that the 90-minute “Survivor” premiere managed only a 2.4 average rating in the key demo of adults 18-49 — well below the 3.1 delivered last spring by the premiere of “Survivor: One World.” And CBS managed only a third-place finish for prime time overall among the broadcast networks.

CBS’s “CSI” didn’t help the cause much, settling for a 2.1 average in viewers 18-49 — off three-tenths of a ratings point from a week ago — while winning the 10 p.m. hour.

Winning the night was Fox, even though its two-hour “American Idol” slipped three-tenths from last week and had the show’s lowest number on a Wednesdy night in 18-49 in almost 11 years — a 4.3.

Fox’s 4.3 in the 18-49 demo led the way for prime time overall, followed by ABC (2.2 average), CBS (2.1) and NBC (1.5). Fox also won total viewers, averaging 13.4 million to CBS’s 8.5 million, ABC’s 6.8 million and NBC’s 5.4 million.

ABC’s “Modern Family” saw its fortunes improve slightly, rising one-tenth of a point to a 3.8 in viewers 18-49. “Suburgatory” ticked up two-tenths to a 2.2 and “Nashville” rose one-tenth from last week’s series low to a 1.8, while “Neighbors” held steady with a 1.7. The bad news for ABC: “The Middle” plummeted four-tenths to a season-low 1.9.

NBC’s best number in 18-49 was a 1.9 for “Chicago Fire,” even with last week; “Guys With Kids” trended downward, sinking to a series-low 1.0, off two-tenths. “Whitney” held steady with a 1.2 and “Law & Order: SVU” improved one-tenth to a 1.6.
