Last night, March 3, 2013, was a phenomenal Sunday for the History channel. With the premiere of its miniseries “The Bible,” followed by the premiere of its first scripted series — the 10-episode “Vikings” — the ratings were nothing short of spectacular.

“In the 8-10 p.m. premiere 13.1 million total viewers flocked to ‘The Bible,’ including 4.6 million adults 25-54,” History said in a press release. “Over two telecasts on premiere night, ‘The Bible’ averaged 14.8 million viewers, 5 million adults 18-49 and 5.6 million adults 25-54. … Leading into the premiere History.com had its best day ever … and ‘The Bible’ trended as No. 1 on Twitter.”

Following the two-hour premiere of “The Bible” came the series debut of “Vikings” at 10 p.m. (ET). Said another History press release: “‘Vikings’ conquered 6.2 million total viewers in its 10 p.m. premiere timeslot, 2.7 million adults 25-54 and 2.5 million adults 18-49. … At 10 p.m., ‘Vikings’ topped all broadcast networks among adults 18-49.”

The press release added, “Over two telecasts on premiere night, Sunday, March 3, ‘Vikings’ delivered 8.3 million total viewers, 3.4 million adults 18-49 and 3.8 million adults 25-54.”

The “Vikings” premiere ratings give History bragging rights as having the No. 1 new series cable launch so far in 2013, and “The Bible’s” huge ratings make it the No. 1 “cable entertainment” telecast thus far in 2013.
