'Downton Abbey' Actress -- Calling Her Character a 'Thoroughly Despicable Human Being' -- Says She's Leaving the Show Mirror, NY Times
The period drama “Downton Abbey” is losing a character viewers love to hate. The U.K.’s Mirror reports that actress Siobhan Finneran, better known as the scheming maid O'Brien, told the publication she won't be back.
“I’m not doing any more. O’Brien is a thoroughly despicable human being -- that was great to play," Finneran said, according to the report.
An announcement from PBS about several new actors didn't mention Finneran or whether she would return, The New York Times adds. Other new actors include Tom Cullen, who will play Lord Gillingham, and soprano Kiri Te Kanawa, who will appear as a guest who "sings in the house," according to the network's statement.
Actress Shirley MacLaine will return to the fourth season of "Downton Abbey," reprising her role as Martha Levinson, the outspoken mother of Cora, Countess of Grantham, The Times' ArtsBeat reports.
The network didn't disclose a premiere date for the fourth season.
