A television comeback is in the works for one of the quintessential American cartoon characters. The Hollywood Reporter’s Live Feed reports that Disney Channel has ordered a new series of cartoons featuring Mickey Mouse.

The animated shorts starring the classic Walt Disney character will have a distinct 1920s and 1930s flair, the report notes.

The shorts will be produced in 2D animation and targeted toward children age 6 to 14 and families. The series of 19 cartoons, under the series title “Mickey Mouse,” is set to premiere June 28 on a wide range of platforms including Disney Channel, Disney.com and WATCH Disney Channel.

The cartoons will debut on Fridays and air throughout the day, the story says. The Mickey Mouse character was created by Walt Disney in 1928, making him 85 years old this year.

In a statement, Disney Channels Worldwide President and Chief Creative Officer Gary Marsh said: "By bringing Mickey’s comedic adventures to life with vitality, humor, inventiveness and charm, the entire Disney Television Animation team of artists, animators and directors have worked to capture the essence of what Walt Disney himself created 85 years ago.”

Here’s a preview, “Croissant de Triomphe,” from the Disney site — don’t be alarmed that the dialog is in French, as the clip is mostly an action sequence:

  1. Garsh Mickey, a-hyuk, the animation SUCKS!

  2. This is wonderful. It has the same style as the old movie pre-roll cartoons. If I didn’t already know, I would have thought it was one of the originals. It is sad that some people have no appreciation for this type of classic animation.
