A longtime cast member on NBC’s “Law & Order” will replace the famed rocker who was set to play Marvin Gaye in the TV biopic “Sexual Healing,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Jesse L. Martin, who played NYPD Det. Ed Green on the NBC procedural, replaces singer and musician Lenny Kravitz in the role, THR reports.

“Martin originally had been attached to play the late singer in a version produced by James Gandolfini — who also had plans to co-star as music promoter Freddy Cousaert — in 2008,” THR reports. “After the project stalled, Kravitz signed on for the lead role in the Julien Temple-directed movie in November, but Gaye’s son Marvin Gaye III voiced his objections to the project, which was said to focus on Gaye’s life in the ’80s when he battled drug abuse and depression.”

The focus of the project now is on Gaye’s efforts to put his career back on track, the piece notes. The Cousaert role has been taken over by Brendan Gleeson.

Filming is set to start later this month.
