Maria Shriver Returns to NBC

Former NBC correspondent Maria Shriver returned to the network Monday, contributing a report to "Today" about the newly elected pope. The report marked a first step for Shriver to resume her role with the network, reports The New York Times.

Shriver introduced a story about why the pope had chosen the name Francis, and "Today" used social media Sunday night to tease her return, the story notes.

"Ms. Shriver was a well-known correspondent for NBC between 1986 and 2003, appearing mostly on ‘Dateline NBC,’ the network’s prime-time newsmagazine,” The Times reports. “She took an extended leave of absence when Arnold Schwarzenegger, her husband, ran for governor of California. After Mr. Schwarzenegger won the election, she came back to ‘Dateline’ a couple of times, but decided in 2004 that she couldn’t continue to report or anchor while also serving as first lady of California. She asked to be relieved of her duties at NBC."

After Schwarzenegger left the governor’s office, there was speculation that Shriver might return to TV. Schwarzenegger and Shriver separated in 2011 after a scandal surfaced about his fathering a child with a member of their household staff.

Shriver has gradually emerged into public life, publishing a weekly newsletter and hosting conferences, the story notes.

NBC News didn’t make an announcement about a new role for her, nor did a title appear on screen, such as "contributor." A spokeswoman for the show declined to comment on her title.

"Maria Shriver is participating in NBC News’ coverage of Pope Francis in Rome," the spokeswoman said.
